Africa Fashion Week Join the New York Fashion Week Calendar

New York City, August 23, 2014- The fashion industry has been under a microscope. Authors such as Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond and Poundo Gomis  have written about the under-representation of racially diverse models in runway shows.
Last September, former model Bethann Hardison's company, Diversity Coalition, published an open letter to fashion councils in New York, London, Milan and Paris that called to task designers who used very few or no models of color in their fashion shows.
The fifth annual Africa Fashion Week has moved its dates to September 4th-6th from July to showcase a more diverse roster of Africa's top designers during New York Fashion Week, September 4-11th, 2014. The schedule of this year’s production is as follows:
  • Day.01 -  Thursday 6PM EDT | Sept. 4th  2014 |  United Nations Foundation  |  801 2nd Ave, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10017 (Master Class Off the Runway)
  • Day.02-  Friday 7PM EDT | September 5th  2014  |  Vogt Gallery  | 526 W 26TH Street Suite 205 New York, NY 10001 (Presentation, Pop Up Shop, Press Dinner)
  • Day.03 - Saturday 7PM EDT | September 6th  2014| Metropolitan Pavilion (The Gallery) |  125 West 18th Street New York, NY 10011 (Runway Show)

Africa Fashion Week Gives Back In Style to the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation Through A.S.A.P (Adiree.Sustains. Africa.Program)

New York City, August 23, 2014- The fashion and political world is still buzzing about Jill Biden, the wife of US vice president Joe Biden, wearing a turquoise wax print dress at the Aug. 5 White House dinner in honor of the US-Africa Leaders summit. The dress was  custom designed by Madame Monique Gieskes, sewing shop owner and a group director for Vlisco, after meeting Mrs Biden in Kinshasa, Congo on July 4th 2014 (http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/reliable-source/wp/2014/08/06/the-story-behind-jill-bidens-wax-print-dress-at-last-nights-white-house-dinner/).
Dikembe Mutombo, a Congolese-American former NBA basketball player and humanitarian, was in the Congo at the time of Mrs Biden's visit last July.
Mutombo is the chairman and president of Dikembe Mutombo Foundation (DMF) that helps to improve living conditions, mainly focusing on health, education and quality of life, for the people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He is the first Youth Emissary for the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and has served on the Advisory Board for the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health.
The Biamba Marie Mutombo hospital, which was named after Mutombo’s mother, was opened in 2007 and has treated over 100,000 men, women and children.
A portion of the proceeds from tickets sold during Africa Fashion Week will benefit the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation
